PARALLEL SKIING MEDIUM RADIUS TURNS

Parallel turns are often referred to as long radius, medium radius and short radius. In the sequence below we discuss the medium radius turn.

At the left the skier initiates the turn by releasing the ski edges from the previous turn and pointing the new inside little toe of the foot in the direction of the turn. Flexing the new inside leg also helps in moving the center of mass in the direction of the new turn. The body tilts in the direction of the turn engaging ski edges with inclination and angulation of the knees (center). The right photo shows the shaping phase of the turn where the skier chooses how much edge engagement with the snow is needed.

At the completion phase of the turn (left photo) the skier's upper body is anticipating the next turn (upper body twists in the direction of the new turn). In the last photo the skier releases the ski edges and points the new inside little toe in the direction of the next turn.
