THE BEGINNING SLALOM STEP OFF

An easy way to learn how to slalom ski is to get up on two skis and drop one. Get up on 2 skis and ski directly behind the tow boat (Photo 1). Gradually transfer weight to the slalom ski (Photo 2). A question often asked is "What foot is the front foot for me". One way to determine this is to have someone gently push you forward from the back. Whichever foot steps forward first is your front foot on the slalom ski. Next, step off the ski and hold the foot out slightly for balance (Photo 3).

Slowly bring your rear foot into position to maintain balance. If this feels uncomfortable, keep the foot out until balance is maintained. Finally insert your rear foot into the foot cuff on the back of the slalom and keep the legs bent for balance (Photo 4). Don't put too much weight on the back foot or your ski will "fish tail".
